1. Short summary

FuelEcon is a free web calculator. We don't require you to create an account, and we don't sell your personal information. The data we collect falls into three buckets:

  • Basic server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) used to keep the site running and secure.
  • Advertising data collected by Google AdSense to serve ads and measure performance.
  • Local-only data — your saved vehicles and preferences — stored in your own browser and never sent to us.

2. Information we collect

Information you voluntarily provide

When you use our calculators, you can enter data such as vehicle MPG, gas price, trip distance, and vehicle nicknames. This information is saved in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB) and is not transmitted to our servers unless you explicitly use a feature that requires syncing (for example, a future synced garage feature, which is not live as of the effective date of this policy).

If you contact us via the contact page or by email, we receive the name, email address, and message you send.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) automatically collects technical information when you visit, including IP address, browser user agent, referrer, and the time of the request. This is used for security, abuse prevention, and aggregate analytics. We do not use this information to identify individual visitors.

3. How we use information

  • To provide and maintain the FuelEcon service.
  • To improve the accuracy and usefulness of our calculators.
  • To respond to your inquiries or feedback.
  • To detect, prevent, and address technical issues or abuse.
  • To serve relevant advertising through Google AdSense (see below).
  • To comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your data with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

4. Advertising & cookies

FuelEcon uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google is a third-party vendor that uses cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to FuelEcon and other sites. Specifically:

  • Google uses cookies to serve ads based on your visits to our site and other sites on the internet.
  • You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
  • Alternatively, you can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.com (EEA/UK).

Google's use of advertising cookies is governed by the Google Ads policies. We do not have access to the data collected by these cookies.

Cookie consent (EEA, UK, Switzerland): If you visit from the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we display a consent prompt before any non-essential cookies are set. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by clearing your cookies and revisiting the site.

5. Third-party services

We use the following third-party services, each with its own privacy policy:

  • Cloudflare — hosting, CDN, and security. Privacy policy.
  • Google AdSense — advertising. Privacy policy.
  • OpenStreetMap / CartoDB — map tiles for FuelEcon Maps. OSM privacy.
  • Nominatim — geocoding of addresses to coordinates. Operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation.
  • OSRM — routing and distance calculation on open data.

6. Local storage & device data

FuelEcon uses your browser's IndexedDB and LocalStorage to save your vehicle presets, preferences, and recent trips. This data lives entirely on your device. You can clear it at any time through your browser's site settings.

FuelEcon is also a Progressive Web App (PWA). If you install it to your home screen, a service worker caches static assets so the app works offline. The cache does not contain any identifying information.

7. Your privacy rights

Rights under GDPR (EEA, UK)

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction or deletion of that data.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Request data portability.
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Rights under CCPA / CPRA (California)

California residents have the right to:

  • Know what personal information is collected and how it is used.
  • Request deletion of personal information.
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
  • Non-discrimination for exercising these rights.

8. Children

FuelEcon is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

9. Security & retention

We use industry-standard security practices (TLS encryption in transit, Cloudflare's edge security, minimal data collection) to protect any information we hold. Server logs are retained for a maximum of 30 days except where retention is required for legal compliance or abuse investigation.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the "Effective" date at the top of this page. Continued use of FuelEcon after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
